Ask the Experts: Best Acid-Resistant Composite?

What Thermoset Composite Materials are Engineered for Superior Levels of Acid Resistance?

Choosing the right thermoset composite for acid resistance can be a daunting task, especially when you need to balance other critical properties like temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and the specific requirements of your application. The good news? Thermoset composites offer remarkable versatility and can be customized to meet your precise needs.

Which thermoset composite laminates are best suited to serving as acid-resistant materials? There are a range of different options, but Atlas Fibre asked one of our many material experts, Jeff Zack, about which of the composite laminates we have in stock would be best suited for components in highly-corrosive environments.

Check out Jeff’s response in the quick video below and discover why certain materials are better than others when it comes to acid resistance.

The Best Composites for Acid Resistance

Glass Epoxy Laminates: G-10 and G-11 Glass Epoxy Composites
Known for their excellent chemical resistance, including resistance to acids, these materials offer high mechanical strength and low moisture absorption. This combination makes them suitable for various industrial applications.

Glass Phenolic Laminates: G-3 Glass Phenolic Laminate
Specifically mentioned for its moisture- and corrosion-resistant properties, G-3 performs excellently in high-heat environments. This makes it an ideal choice for fabricating acid-resistant components.

Thermoset Polyester Glass Composites: GPO-1, GPO-2, and GPO-3 (Fiberglass-Reinforced Polyester)
These materials provide significant chemical resistance along with beneficial properties such as flame retardance and low conductivity, making them versatile for various applications.

Custom Formulated Thermoset Composites: We’d be remiss not to mention that custom formulated composites are also a viable option and in some cases necessary due to the extreme conditions of some applications including those that require chemical resistance. Calibrating acid resistance to industrial solvents and corrosive chemicals, custom formulated thermoset composites can prove suitable for a range of industrial and commercial uses.
