Paper Phenolic

One example of phenolic composite material is paper-based phenolic, available in two forms from Atlas Fibre. Learn more about paper phenolic's applications and benefits.

What Is Paper Phenolic?

Phenolic material is produced through pressurizing, heating, and mixing layers of material like paper with phenolic resin, a combination of phenol and formaldehyde. The resulting composite material is durable, strong, and lightweight. Paper phenolic has good machining properties, dimensional stability, and insulating capabilities.

Types of Paper Phenolic Composites

Several types of paper-based phenolic material are available. Depending on your applications, one form may perform better than others.

Atlas Fibre supplies XX and XXX paper phenolic laminate.

XX

XX paper phenolic consists of a saturating kraft paper substrate and a phenolic resin binder. It’s a general-purpose phenolic composite material that has good electrical insulating and mechanical properties. It costs less than other types of phenolic laminates and is extremely versatile.

The features of XX paper phenolic are:

  • Tensile strength: 35,000 psi
  • Compressive strength: 17,000 psi
  • Flexural strength – LW -A 0.125″: 34,000 psi
  • Bond strength 1,500 psi 10 MPa
  • Shear strength: 11,500 psi 79 MPa
  • Hardness, M scale: 120
  • Specific gravity: 1.35
  • Flammability rating: 94HB
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 2.00
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C – LW: 0.80

XXX

XXX-grade paper-based phenolic composite has even better machining capabilities and excellent electrical insulating properties. This material also performs well in environments with high humidity.

It consists of a high-alpha-saturating paper substrate and phenolic resin. XXX paper-based phenolic also has excellent dimensional stability.

The feature of XXX paper-based phenolic material include:

  • Tensile strength: 35,000 psi
  • Compressive strength: 13,000 psi
  • Flexural strength – LW -A 0.125″: 22,000 psi
  • Bond strength 1,200 psi 8 MPa
  • Shear strength: 12,800 psi 88 MPa
  • Hardness, M scale: 101
  • Specific gravity: 1.38
  • Flammability rating: 94HB
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 0.57
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C – LW: 0.55

Benefits of Using Paper-Based Phenolic

Why use paper phenolic instead of another material type? Some of its benefits include:

  • Affordable pricing
  • High strength over temperature
  • High dimensional stability
  • Good electrical insulating properties
  • Resists humidity

What Are Uses for Paper Phenolic Composites?

Paper phenolic’s electrical insulating properties and humidity resistance make it ideal for use in the following applications:

  • Switch plates
  • Relay spacers
  • Barriers
  • Terminal strips
  • Washers

Paper phenolic composite materials are also available in several shapes and a range of sizes, including:
