Atlas Fibre carries glass melamine, including G-9 thermoset laminates. Glass melamine materials consist of woven glass fabric and a melamine resin, a compound used in plastic products. Melamine has several notable properties, including heat, arc, flame, and alkali resistance. Our G-9 glass melamine qualifies as NEMA G9 and MIL-I-24768/1. Learn more about the uses, benefits and properties of G-9.

What Is G-9 Melamine?

G-9 melamine is one of two types of glass melamine laminate. This material offers excellent hardness and is arc and flame resistant. It can maintain its electrical insulative strength even in conditions that are humid or wet.

The material has good dimensional stability, possesses a high degree of mechanical strength, and machines well.

Notable properties of G-9* are:

  • Tensile strength: 70,000 psi
  • Compressive strength: 39,000 psi
  • Flexural Strength -LW -A 0.125”: 55,000 psi
  • Specific gravity: 1.85
  • Bond strength: 1,900 psi
  • Shear strength: 18,000 psi
  • Hardness — M Scale: 115
  • Flammability rating: 94V-0
  • Water absorption — 24 hours: 0.60
  • Izod impact strength at 49°C -LW: 12.50

G-9 has excellent heat resistance and can withstand temperatures up to 284 degrees Fahrenheit (140 degrees Celsius).

G-9 vs. G-5

G-5 and G-9 are both types of glass melamine. G-5 is older than G-9 and allows for higher amounts of water absorption. It has largely been replaced by G-9, which is better able to withstand exposure to outdoor elements and wet conditions. If a drawing or product still calls for G-5, it’s perfectly acceptable to use G-9 in its place.

G-9 Forms

G-9 is available in various sizes and stock shapes. Atlas Fibre offers G-9 in the following shapes:

  • Tubes: Thanks to its hardness, G-9 is an ideal material to use for tubes. Atlas Fibre has several tube lengths and diameters available.
  • Rods: G-9 rods are made from a melamine binder and continuous glass cloth base. We have them available in several lengths and thicknesses and can cut the material to size for you.
  • Sheets: We can fabricate G-9 sheets based on your project needs. Sheets are available in various dimensions and thicknesses.

Benefits of G-9

Perhaps the biggest benefit of G-9 is its ability to withstand humid or wet conditions.

Other benefits include:

  • Good dimensional stability
  • Strong alkali, heat, arc, and flame resistance
  • A high degree of hardness
  • Excellent electrical properties.

 G-9 Glass Melamine Laminate Uses

G-9 glass melamine has several uses, including:

  • Arc barriers
  • Armature for insulation
  • Specialty terminal blocks
  • Switchboard panels
  • Switch mounts
  • Circuit breaker components
  • Motor wedges
  • Terminal boards

If you have an application that requires electrical insulation and good mechanical strength, G-9 may be the best material to use.
